The first time I walked into a coworking space, I was convinced I’d get twice as much work done. The energy was great — people chatting over coffee, the soft hum of laptops, and the occasional burst of laughter from the corner. But by lunch, I’d spent more time in conversations than in my actual work.

Coworking spaces can be inspiring, but they also have their fair share of distractions. Over time, I figured out a rhythm that let me enjoy the buzz without losing my focus.

The key for me was creating mental boundaries. I started choosing a desk that wasn’t in the middle of the busiest area. It sounds obvious now, but being a few feet away from the coffee machine cut my interruptions in half.

Another small change was setting “focus windows” — blocks of time when I wouldn’t chat, scroll, or even check my phone. I let people around me know about it, and surprisingly, they respected it. Once they saw I was in “heads-down mode,” they left me to it.

Then there’s the sound factor. I used to think headphones were just for music, but I discovered they’re also a polite “do not disturb” sign. Even if I wasn’t listening to anything, wearing them made a difference.

And of course, breaks matter. It’s easy to feel like you need to work straight through in a shared space to justify your seat, but taking 10 minutes to stretch or grab a coffee actually kept me sharper for the rest of the day.

A coworking space is like a café mixed with an office — the trick is learning when to lean into the social energy and when to protect your own bubble. Once you find that balance, you get the best of both worlds: productivity and connection.
